Mamie Lenore (Green) Burks was born on February 19th, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and twenty seven. She was the daughter of, Jesse Cleveland Green and Jimmie Ann (Frazier) Green of Christiana, Tennessee. In 1946 Mamie married a young man she had grown up around, Claude Burks. Claude had recently been honorable discharged from the Army and came home looking “sharp” in his uniform and soon won her heart. Claude and Mamie lived in Tullahoma and both worked at Genesco Shoe Plant, (called General Shoe back then). In 1949 the kids started coming and soon they bought a place outside Manchester on the Fredonia Road. They were eager to get out of town and live in the country again.
Mamie’s father and mother taught her and her siblings the Bible, and by example, showed them how to live the Christian life. Mamie was baptized into Christ at the age of 14, and following her parents example, raised her own children in the training and instruction of the Lord, living for Christ the rest of her life. She was known at work and in the community as a follower of Christ by her words and deeds. Mamie was always thinking of and serving others. She often went to the homes of elderly family members and others to serve in whatever way was needed.
Mamie loved to be outside working in the garden or in one of her many flower beds. The Lord blessed her with a “Green Thumb, so that she was able to grow things very well. Her yard is filled with beautiful plants and flowers that have outlasted her ability to care for them. Mamie’s love of the outside was from her childhood, her favorite memory was “going to the barn with her daddy”, and she enjoyed sharing those sweet memories with everyone.
Mamie was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Claude Burks, her parents, Jesse and Jimmie Green, two brothers, Earnest (Jessie Pearl) Green, Earvin (Thelma) Green. She was survived by her dear sister, Lou Adena (Green) Smith, her 6 children, Launora Ann (Franklin) Elkins, Claudia Jan (Billy) Alford, Claude Cleveland (Peggy) Burks, Johnny Dale (Penny) Burks, Amy Denise (Billy) Sherrell, Angela Pam (Jim – deceased) Rhea. 18 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 2 great, great, grandchildren, many beloved nieces and nephews and a great host of friends.
Mamie passed from this life on Tuesday, October 3rd at the age of 96, in her home, surrounded by her family. Though we, her family, miss her and we always will, we are comforted by the knowledge that she is now at home with her Lord.
