BiographyEdith Haggard Morrow Hickerson, 92, died at her home on July 11, 2011. She was born February 2, 1919 in Waynesboro, Tennessee, attended Ward Belmont College, Vanderbilt University, and George Peabody College for Teachers. She began her teaching career in Mississippi and was then married to the late Marion Wright Hickerson, Jr. After World War II they made their home in Manchester where she became an active member of the community, chairing and serving on the Manchester Board of Education. With her husband’s early, tragic death, she devoted her time to her two children and the banking business. Serving tirelessly on the boards of the Wayne County Bank, The Bank of Waynesboro, and First National Bank of Manchester, she shepherded these institutions through periods of upheaval and growth. She was also a dedicated member of The Green Thumb Garden Club and The Literary Forum. She remained an avid conservationist throughout her life and found great solace in nature as well as books. These passions live on in her children and grandchildren who will miss her wit and wisdom. She is survived by her sister, Jeanne Morrow Knowles of Jackson, her son Marion Wright Hickerson III, and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Hickerson of Nashville, daughter, Edith Morrow Hickerson Johnson and son-in-law, Clifford Hastings Johnson of Houston, TX, and four grandchildren: Mary Camille Hickerson, an attorney in Memphis; First Lieutenant James Wright Harlin Hickerson, who is serving in the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan; Ann Morrow Johnson, a graduate student at Yale University; and Alice Hastings Johnson, an incoming first year student at Vanderbilt University. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the loving care she received from the kind team of caregivers led by Chris Ferrell. Visitation will be Wednesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Manchester Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Manchester Cemetery on High Street.
