Gary Douglas Alford, age 83 of Manchester, TN passed from this life on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Unity Medical Center in Manchester. He was born on February 2, 1941, to the late Marion Houston and Edith Peary Alford in HooDoo, TN. Gary served his country in the United States, enlisting in October 1959, at the age of 17. When Gary returned home from the service, he began doing excavation work and started his own transportation company called A1 Transport.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by two daughters, Sherry Carter and Sheila Cantrell; son, Ronnie Cantrell; grandchildren, Faith Gilchrist and Buddy Wayne Evans; great grandchild, Brittannie Phipps; brothers, Jessie Lee (Nina) Alford, Murial (Beatrice) Alford, and Marion Alford; sisters, Emogene Burgess, Oreane (Earl) Hockett, Betty May (John Robert) Hockett, Vivian (Jimmy) Floyd, Lois Rayburn, Juanita Alford, and Cathy Alford; nephews and good friends, Basal Hockett, Ronnie Alford, and Mike Alford. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Virtie Mae “Sam” Alford; son, Barry (Melissa) Alford; daughters, Jean (Brent) Brock and Melissa Hice; grandchildren, Ryan, Casey, James, Brittany, Bailey, Jason, and Chris; multiple great grandchildren; brothers, Wayne (Brenda) Alford, Billy (Jan) Alford, and Virgil (Anita) Alford; sisters, Doris Alford, Vinita (Kenneth) McGowan, and Linda Fay Collins; several extended family members and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Gary Douglas Alford of Manchester will be conducted on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 1 PM in the Manchester Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Brian Stowers officiating. Burial will follow in HooDoo Cemetery in Beechgrove. Visitation with the family be held on Friday, April 5th from 5 – 8 pm at the funeral home.
